To be moved, to be moved constantly by your own songs. You need it to be in tune with them, and I don’t mean in tune musically, but I mean in tune with the lyrics of the songs, with the words of the songs, and with the meaning. You need to be in tune with all of that, and that takes a little bit of doing.
--Roberta Flack
Hello Kirk, It's too bad we lost another great artist. It's hard to know whether she died for old age, or just didn't have the heart to go on.
ReplyDelete--Jim
Jim, her age surprised me a bit, only because I've been conditioned to expect pop stars to be still in their 20s at the time of their first hits. She would have been around 34 when she first hit it big.
DeleteThat was sad news to learn today and I had no idea of her age. Her music and talent will go on.

DeleteArtistry recorded for posterity--one of the few things that can be counted on in this cockeyed caravan, Andrew.
DeleteHer voice and music were such a gift to the world. RIP Roberta Flack.
ReplyDeleteAs it was recorded, Debra, it's the gift that keeps on giving.
DeleteWhat a voice and what unusual style.
ReplyDeleteAnd to think, Mitchell, she was considered a middle-of-the-road artist.
DeleteKilling me softly is sublime, it’s followed my dark moods for all of my life
ReplyDeleteAnd that's what the song is about, John, that connection between the artist and the audience, and sometimes it's a very dark connection indeed.
DeleteOld people are dropping like flies. Make it stop!
ReplyDeleteI'll get God right on it, Mike.
DeleteShe has such a beautiful voice. Great choice on those two songs to post. Killing Me Softly, lyrics are so hauntingly wonderful. It makes me think of one summer when my parents would play tennis into the late evening on a Friday night with their friends and I would fall asleep in the back seat on the way home. For whatever reason, that song seemed to be on the radio on those Friday summer nights.
ReplyDeleteHer voice belongs to the night, JM.
DeleteRIP Roberta. Great singer.
ReplyDeleteShe sure was, Ananka.
DeleteRIP to a great artist. That's a good quote. It makes me think about how much intention goes into creating art.
ReplyDeleteThat's right, Lux. You can't just coast on talent alone.
