Stonewall Inn, 1969 |
NEWS FLASH: The National Park Service eliminated references to transgender people from its Stonewall National Monument website on Thursday, which now only refers to those who are lesbian, gay and bisexual. According to a Park Service spokesperson, “The National Park Service is implementing Executive Order 14168 and Secretary’s Order 2416,” referring to orders entitled “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government” and “Ending DEI Programs and Gender Ideology Extremism.”
With that in mind:
Who controls the present controls the past.
--George Orwell, Nineteen Eighty-Four
I had to think about it, something my brain dislikes, but I can't agree with Orwell. I think I've come to understand that all these things #47 is doing is to distract us while he and his minions work away in the background. Maybe I am wrong about that but I can't see why he would focus on relatively trivial matters to him, without his focus on his bigger picture, whatever that is.
ReplyDeleteWell, Andrew, Orwell never knew of #47. I'm just borrowing his words to make a point, so it's really me you're disagreeing with, but that's all right, because it's really not that much of a disagreement. In fact, I agree it's a distraction. I just think control of the past enables that distraction.
DeleteFrightening. Is this North Korea or the Soviet Union?
ReplyDeleteMitchell, I'm waiting for the latest Executive Order to find out.
DeleteWe still know the truth.
ReplyDeleteAnd the truth has a subversive quality all its own, Debra. I truly believe that.
DeleteHello Kirk, You are being too lenient with the executive orders. The guy with the plaid shorts definitely looks questionable, and the one with the floppy hat too, although this was the '60's. Actually, given the date of 1969, this looks like a pretty clean-cut group.
ReplyDelete--Jim
You know, Jim, I wonder if those plaid short might actually be a plaid skirt. It's kind of hard to tell.
DeleteNow that isn't right.....considering all the trans individuals involved with the Stonewall and the riots. I can't take much more of this bullshit.
ReplyDeleteMaddie, this snippet from the Wikipedia article describing the riots:
Delete"With larger numbers, police detained anyone they could and put them in patrol wagons to go to jail, though Inspector Pine recalled, 'Fights erupted with the transvestites, who wouldn't go into the patrol wagon.' His recollection was corroborated by another witness across the street who said, 'All I could see about who was fighting was that it was transvestites and they were fighting furiously.'"
And this little snippet:
"The mob openly mocked the police. The crowd cheered, started impromptu kick lines and sang to the tune of 'Ta-ra-ra Boom-de-ay': 'We are the Stonewall girls/ We wear our hair in curls/ We don't wear underwear/ We show our pubic hair.'"
And finally, this parting snippet:
"As the riots went on into the early hours of the morning, Johnson, along with Zazu Nova and Jackie Hormona, were noted as 'three individuals known to have been in the vanguard' of the pushback against the police."
Jackie Hormona was a gay street kid and cis male who presented himself as male. Not so Zazu Nova, a trans sex worker. As for Johnson, well, her first name was Marsha. 'Nuff said.
