For those of you who live in Ohio, the deadline to register to vote in the 2024 elections is October 7, this coming Monday. Above are all the things you need to know and do and be in order to register. However, it may not be all that easy to read as at some point the words shrink quite a bit (just what you need in an election where there's bound to be accusations of fraud and voter suppression: small print.) So as a further service I've included the following video provided by the good people at the Cuyahoga County Board of Election themselves in the hope of making things a bit more clear:
Actually, this cautionary tale takes place in the Queens, New York of the 1970s but I think it applies equally well to Cuyahoga County, Ohio of the 2020s as a man of many, many opinions suddenly finds himself unable to act upon a single one of those opinions. Watch:
Don't end up like Archibald. Register!
Stifle, wouldja?!?
ReplyDeleteA command Edith usually and hilariously ignored, Mitchell.
DeleteHello Kirk, I already registered, received my ballot, and printed it out. Now, either tomorrow or Monday I will send it in by registered mail, and then there is an on-line service to track the progress of the ballot.
ReplyDelete.
I do agree with you that the instructions are long, confusing, and would cause many people to give up. The rules about printing the ballot, what must be included where, and even the names of things (calling a simple printed form an envelope, for example) might cause some to give up in confusion.
.
Fortunately for Cuyahoga County, the Election Board there is easy to reach (although not so easy as formerly), and once in contact, they are super helpful and friendly.

Jim, though the video comes from the Cuyahoga Board of Elections, all the dos and don'ts on how to register come straight from Columbus (Ohio's capitol, for those who don't know.) If you could get Frank LaRose (Ohio's Secretary of State) on the phone, how friendly he'd be would depend entirely on how MAGA you are.
DeleteYou left out telling people how to vote correctly, for the right person/party.
ReplyDeleteI'll do that in another post, Andrew. Right now I'm trying to be non-partisan.
DeleteHi, Kirk!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand what all the fuss is about, good buddy. Gosh, the cartoon characters in that Ohio voter registration tutorial were literally jumping for joy - more than happy to go through the simple 99-step, one-strike-you're out process. I'm surprised the video didn't end with "I'm Donald Trump and I approve this message."
If he were still around today, Archie Bunker would be rejected by the MAGA-dominated G.O.P. - scorned for being a RINO and a Radical Far-Left Liberal. Now more than ever, this country needs the sanity, dignity and decency of an Archibald Bunker!
My state does not allow voting by mail. I look forward to being blasted by water cannon for wearing a blue Kamala shirt as I wait in line at the polling place.
Have a nice month, good buddy Kirk. I hope to reconnect with you on or about October 26.
Shady, as I told Jim, the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections--not exactly a MAGA hotbed-- didn't come up with these rules but do have to enforce them. The diversity depicted in the cartoon really does describe the county's electorate. I'm not sure it would describe the state of Ohio as a whole, though. The farther you're away from Cleveland, the less diversity there is.
DeleteWe get a card through the post to vote and take it to a polling station, usually a local school. Things are quite different over the pond eh!
ReplyDeleteAnanka, we here in the US talk a good democracy, but make it increasingly difficult to walk that talk.
DeleteAll In The Family was must see TV back in the day.
ReplyDeleteMike, it's the gold standard for must see TV.
