Quips and Quotations (When the Moon Hits Your Eye Like a Big Pizza Pie Edition)

1926-2024

I try to find stories that I would think that everyone would find interesting, and just a good entertaining story, and then if I can find a story that has a raison d'etre behind it that I feel is important then that's the best for me.

--Norman Jewison, filmmaker

(I like all of the following movies, but see if you can guess which one is my personal favorite--Kirk):

The Cincinatti Kid (1965)

The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming! (1966)

In the Heat of the Night (1967)

Fiddler on the Roof (1971)

Jesus Christ, Superstar (1973)

Moonstruck (1987)

  1. Moonstruck maybe? What an incredible variety of styles and genres in his films.

    1. AWWWWWWWWW, Mitchell, you guessed it! What in the world gave it away?

  2. I know I am going to be wrong but is your favourite Fiddler? It is too obvious to be correct.

    1. Fiddler is too obvious, Andrew? No, I'm afraid Mitchell guessed it.

If it's any consolation, "If I Were a Rich Man" is now running through my head.

  3. So are you predicting his death or are you planning on killing him next year? Wait! Something tells me none of that matters.

    1. Thank you for pointing that out , Mike. I've now corrected it. Lately, I've been musing to myself about how next year the decade will be half over, and the musing found it's way into my post, but Mr. Jewison did die THIS year.

  4. My favourite Jewison movies are Fiddler and Superstar. He had a great touch with musicals.

    1. Put those two musicals together, Debra, and you get Judeo-Christianity.

  5. Hello Kirk, Fiddler is the only one of these I have seen--I always feel so out of touch when reading your blog! On the other hand, I am getting some good ideas for dvd's to watch out for.

    1. Jim, if it makes you feel any better, take note that the many pop culture references on this blog tend to be long of tooth. The closer we get to 2024, the more out of touch I get as well. And I am looking for ways to incorporated non-pop culture material on this blog as well, mostly through politics. In fact, Shadow of a Doubt started out as a political blog, but I soon found that strangely limiting. Pop culture can be that, too, so I now try to mix the two. All I ask is that you stay tuned.

  6. When I accidently run across "The Russians Are Coming!" on TV, I wind up watching it to the end every time.

In order to keep the hucksters, humbugs, scoundrels, psychos, morons, and last but not least, artificial intelligentsia at bay, I have decided to turn on comment moderation. On the plus side, I've gotten rid of the word verification.
