Quips and Quotations (Making Her Entrance Again with Her Usual Flair Edition)

1923-2024

In classical theatre in Europe, everybody plays all kinds of parts. Juliets go on to play the Nurses; they don't want to play Juliet again. I think we've got to remember to grab onto our perks, whatever is the good thing about each age. Each stage of life should be a progression.

The Court Jester (1956)

Mary Poppins (1964)

  1. I only know her from Mary Poppins. She was terrific. Almost reaching 100 is a long life and it is interesting that she was born in South Africa.

    1. Andrew, I'm not sure to what extent it was the accent, but she certainly had a very distinctive voice.

  2. I like her statement about progression in aging.

    1. Debra, as I'm much more aware of my own progressive aging than I used to be, I like it too.

  3. Hello Kirk, Glynis Johns was a remarkable beauty, a fun actress, and she had a trademark voice (that does remind me somewhat of Elsa Lanchester's). What a regrettable loss, even after such a long life.

  4. Elsa Lanchester, Jim? Well, Elsa is in that Mary Poppins clip (the woman dressed mostly in black who's trying to tell Glynis, i.e., Mrs. Banks, something as she sings the suffragette song.) I'll have to watch, and listen, to it again and compare voices.

    1. Elsa's voice is perhaps a little sharper, but they both have that slight lisping quality, added to some sort of English accent. --Jim

  5. "Each stage of life should be a progression."
It is. It's just that the last progression is permanent.

    1. Mike, you sound like a doctor in intensive care trying to break some bad news to a patient's next-of-kin.

  6. I only really knew her from a few films, Mary Poppins being the main one! Amazing to think Dick and Julie are still doing so very well. Is the typo under the main picture a test? I am still writing 2023 on things! I was also talking to someone last year and thinking the new year was 2014!!

I also saw David Soul passed away. RIP to him too.

  7. Not a test, Ananka. Thanks for pointing it out. I've since changed it. I don't want anyone wondering how Glynis could have made all those movies when she was only one year's old.

    1. Many of today's movie will someday be legends, Lux. But first you need the perspective time allows.
