I couldn't forgive him or like him, but I saw that what he had done was, to him, entirely justified. It was all very careless and confused. They were careless people...they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made....
--F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby

Hello Kirk,
ReplyDeleteThe perfect image for this most apposite quotation.
Thank you, Jane, and Lance.
DeleteA very good quote and so apt. I think it could apply to our lot over here too Kirk. Honestly Scotland is in a terrible state just now. Something has to give eh?
ReplyDeleteAnanka, I know you don't want to write about it on you blog, but some day you'll have to share with me just what exactly is going on in Scotland. You've piqued my curiosity!
DeleteThere will lots of cleaning up of mess for the future leading Democrat Party when it regains office in a couple of years.
ReplyDeleteWe may need another New Deal, Andrew.
DeleteA very timely comment from a great novel. I studied it so many years ago in first year university. I have read it twice since without having to work on it for essays to be submitted! The quote is exceptionally appropriate for our times. “Let them eat cake” cannot be far behind.
ReplyDeleteLet me see, David. Marie Antoinette. The storming of the Bas--no wonder this administration has taken such an interest in the Insurrection Act.
DeleteHello Kirk, You found the apposite description for these times.
ReplyDelete--Jim
Thank you, Jim.
DeleteWho knew that Fitzgerald would return, for better or worse..
ReplyDeleteWell, Boud, his book is still in print.
DeleteGreat point!
