The People's Choice

Good news for anyone who believes women--and, really, at the end of the day, everybody--should have autonomy over their own bodies. Ohio voters have approved Issue 1, which will enshrine in the state constitution “an individual right to one’s own reproductive medical treatment, including but not limited to abortion.”

It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing--and this state's still got it.

    1. Mitchell, moments of relief may be few and far between, but they do happen.

  2. It is surprising to my mental image of Ohio that it would approve this. How will this stand against Federal legislation?

    1. Andrew, at the present time there is no federal legislation, only a federal Supreme Court ruling that a state has the rights to restrict abortion if it so wishes. If Congress were to pass a law, or a president to sign an executive order banning abortion nationwide, I imagine such a law or such an order would end up in the Supreme Court once again. We'll see what happens.

  3. Hello Kirk, Sending in all these absentee ballots is costing me a fortune, but it is worth it! I double-checked on the Cuyahoga site and my ballot was received and counted.

    1. In these distrustful times, Jim, that your ballot was received and counted could be considered a bargain, no matter the cost.

    2. Some of my relatives in Cleveland do not trust the mails (apparently for good reasons) and drop off their ballots in person at the Cuyahoga Board of Elections--these elections lately are that important. Since I have to use the mail, I am always relieved to see my ballot received and processed. --Jim

    3. Jim, there's been all kind of stories the past year about mail being stolen from mailboxes and post offices. Not just ballots, any kind of mail. If that wasn't enough, on Tuesday a mailman was robbed at gunpoint in South Euclid by two young men in Halloween masks. Fortunately, the mailman wasn't hurt. For whatever reason, Cleveland Heights police responded to the crime. Now there's some question on whether they'll continue to investigate or if it will be turned over to the South Euclid Police Department. Somebody better make up their minds fast. The perpetrators are still at large!

  4. Missouri voters passed referendums on voting and later guns, and the right wing Missouri legislature overturned both of them.

    1. Mike, as they once said about Superman (an Ohio native), it's a neverending battle.
