Vital Viewing (Pushing the Encycle Edition)

Remember this?

Sinead O'Connor's confession to Dr. Phil:

Now let's hear what one-time Saturday Night Live bandleader G.E. Smith has to say about the whole brouhaha:

Well, of course Smith is going to defend O'Connor. Those hedonistic show biz types all stick together. But what about the damage done to the Roman Catholic Church?

It somehow survived.

In fact, at times the Roman Catholic Church's survival skills are damn near miraculous.

But back to Sinead:

She could have been singing about herself.

  1. It was such sad news to wake to this morning. She was such a brave woman, unafraid to take on any institution.

    1. I wholeheartedly agree, Andrew. The sexual abuse scandals and the Vatican's attempts to cover them up certainly proved her right in her criticisms. Unfortunately, in spite of that I'm afraid all too many people saw O'Connor as a flake. Her personal problems probably didn't help matters any.

  2. I remember that incident very well. Everyone in my social circle at the time all supported her action and criticism of Catholicism. Her biggest supporter was a lesbian ex-Catholic nun I knew. I think today no one would bat an eye at someone ripping up the Pope's picture. There'd be a lineup to join in doing so!

  3. I remember being so furious with those who attacked her for that action. She had such a troubled life, so much pain, and so much talent. Madonna, especially infuriated me with her response. What a hypocrite.

    1. Mitchell, I like Madonna, but that was hardly her finest moment. Here's what Jon Pareles of The New York Times had to say:

"After Madonna had herself gowned, harnessed, strapped down and fully stripped to promote her album Erotica and her book Sex, O'Connor stole the spotlight with one photograph of a fully clothed man."

      And this from Spin magazine:

"But when the Sinead controversy threatened to siphon some of the attention from the impending release of Sex, Madonna conveniently found religion again..."

      Heaven help us.

  4. Hello Kirk, O'Connor had a strange life, and obviously made many peculiar or wrong decisions. While often being on the side of right, she nevertheless did much to damage her credibility. Her life was very complicated, but I don't think I am willing to put in the effort to read much more about her to make up my mind about her. Incidentally, I have never heard any of her music.

    1. Jim, that third video is O'Connor's signature song. All you have to do is click it on.

    2. Hi again, I missed the play button on that image before. I listened to it now, and I admit she has a certain style and vocal quality. --Jim
