Quips and Quotations (Counterculture Coiffure Edition)

1941-2023

I come from a school of people, folk singers, and the tradition there is troubadours, and you're carrying a message. Admittedly, our job is partly just to make you boogie, just make you want to dance. Part of our job is to take you on a little voyage, tell you a story. But part of our job is to communicate the way a town crier did: It's 12:00 and all is well, or it's 11:30 and the whole Congress is sold. It's part of the job.

  2. Hi, Kirk!

You wrote: " I seem to be locked into a symbiotic relationship with the Grim Reaper." Ain't it the truth, good buddy... and I call bullcrap on The Reaper for taking our counterculture heroes. Me no likey!

What a great jam in that live CSNY performance of "Almost Cut My Hair"... making guys like me miss those glory years of rockin' message music that featured powerful, brutally honest songwriting, gritty vocals and outstanding musicianship.

Thank you David Crosby for your immeasurable contributions to the soundtrack of my youth and to the content of my character, and thank you, good buddy Kirk, for paying tribute to this giant of rock on short notice. Have a safe and happy weekend!

    1. Shady, I have "rock 'n' roll" as one of the keywords, because Crosby was generally seen as a rock musician, but as he himself states in his quote, he started out in folk, which for a while anyway pushed rock into the direction of what you call "message music". The Elvis Presley/Chuck Berry/Little Richard brand of rock never did that, at least not explicitly.

I see a Philadelphia deejay named Jerry Blavat has died. I believed you've used him as a "host" on your Shady's Place blog in the past.

    2. OMG, I hadn't read about Jerry Blavat's death. It comes as a tremendous shock, good buddy. I heard it from you first, and appreciate you informing me. Now Jerry joins fellow Wibbage DJs (and Shady's Place presenters) Joe Niagara and Hy Lit in rock & roll heaven, along with all the great singers and musicians we've lost. I get it now. The Reaper fancies himself as a promoter and he's putting together a super show up there.

"Keep on rockin'... 'cause you only rock once!"

    1. Debra, it's a flag so many people would just as soon have burned. Can't let that happen.

  4. Loved his music and the way they could harmonize.

    1. JM, I think the harmonizing was more distinctive that any instrument Crosby, Stills, and Nash (and sometimes Young) happened to play.
