In the comment section of a recent post of mine, I said someone I've long admired had died and I would be doing an obit on him. Just so as there's no misunderstanding, the Vietnam vet pictured above is NOT that person. Nevertheless, I am not unmoved by his passing, and admit that both during his military service (including his stay at a "Hilton"), and his long political career afterwards, he could at times rise to the occasion. None of which means I think he would have made a good president (though he would have made a much better one than a certain casino mogul I can think of.) So, yes, I have mixed feelings about him. As did this writer for The Nation. His opinions don't completely match up with mine (though it's tempting, I wouldn't quite call myself a pacifist--blame that on Hitler) but they come close. If you have the time, you might want to give it a read:

Ten years ago a new friend boldly asked me which candidate I favored in that year's presidential election. Before I could answer, she added, "because you strike me as a McCain man." I became so furious with her that it nearly ended our friendship before it began. Today, when I compare your person of interest to the current president - "Mr. T" ("I pity the fool who disagrees with me!") - I am proud to say, for the first time, that I am a McCain man.
ReplyDeleteShady, Mr T is beginning to make Nixon look good.
DeleteWhat was interesting was to see Lindsay Graham speak so highly of his "friend and colleague" John McCain. Then you remember Lindsay didn't defend John against Trump, Lindsay praised him.
ReplyDeleteWith friends like that, who needs enemies?
Adam, sounds like Graham is a fair-weather friend, and it's amazing how fair the weather gets when someone dies.
DeleteI never agreed with his politics, but there is no denying that John McCain was a true American war hero and a man of honour and integrity. If all Republicans were like him, the USA wouldn't be in the huge mess it's in today.
ReplyDeleteEven better, Debra, if all Republicans were like Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt, the USA wouldn't be in the huge mess it is today.
