Period Pieces

You've read it right here in Shadow of a Doubt (actually in Wikipedia by way of Shadow of a Doubt.) To repeat, today is World Emoji Day. The general reaction to such a holiday?

Feelings are mixed.

  1. Nice work. I always thought emojis were a Japanese invention.

    1. Andrew, as I understand it, Japan didn't invent but popularized its use. Sorta like it did with the transistor (but I'm dating myself.)

  2. Pretty funny! It’s not so many years ago the term was unknown, yet now it’s part of the lexicon. 🤪

    1. David, some years back I did a 15-part series on the original (1966-68) Star Trek series, and in very last installment I took on the question of whether people 300 years in the future really still will be using the same colloquial English heard on the show. It occurred to me not only was that unlikely, but people PRESENTLY aren't even talking like they did in 1966! All kinds of words have entered the language since then. Enough of time passes, and what I'm writing at this very moment will seem like Shakespeare to some future reader (well...maybe not QUITE as eloquent.)

  3. Haha feelings certainly are mixed! For me, emojis are quite useful for texting to convey feelings and facial expressions, especially when comedy is involved in my texts!!!

  4. I'm pretty emoji dumb. I need captions for a lot of them.
Comment moderation is good. I've found that even friendly commenters sometimes fire off an unguarded inappropriate comment. I usually save them from embarrassment by not publishing.

    1. Boud, the reason I have comment moderation is because in the past when I didn't have it this blog was quickly overtaken with spam.

  5. Hi, Kirk!

Happy 23rd b-day to our good friend Emoji.😊😊😊

Shucks, I don't know how mankind was able to communicate and express emotion before the little guy was introduced. Oh, that's right. We had the emoticon. :) But, before that, remember all the writing we needed to do? 😒😒😒 Remember all the thinking? 😢😢😢 Remember all that wasted time? 😞😞😞😢😢😢

I'll be back Sunday with my 17th anniversary post and invite you to join me if you get the chance. Enjoy the rest of your week and weekend, good buddy Kirk! 😂😂😂

    1. Shady, the odd thing about the emoticon is, unlike an emoji, that would have been possible to do on an old-fashioned typewriter, yet no one ever did it!

  6. I liked to previous version of emojis better. It seems like they changed about 6 months ago.

In order to keep the hucksters, humbugs, scoundrels, psychos, morons, and last but not least, artificial intelligentsia at bay, I have decided to turn on comment moderation. On the plus side, I've gotten rid of the word verification.
