The stage is not merely the meeting place of all the arts, but is also the return of art to life.
--Oscar Wilde
The theater is a communal event, like church. The playwright constructs a mass to be performed for a lot of people. She writes a prayer, which is really just the longings of one heart.
--Marsha Norman
By whatever means it is accomplished, the prime business of a play is to arouse the passions of its audience so that by the route of passion may be opened up new relationships between a man and men, and between men and Man. Drama is akin to the other inventions of man in that it ought to help us to know more, and not merely to spend our feelings.
--Arthur Miller
I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.
--Thornton Wilder
The theatre is a place where one has time for the problems of people to whom one would show the door if they came to one's office for a job.
--Tennessee Williams

I like the Tennessee Williams quote best of all, but they all contain a good degree of truth.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I saved Williams for last, David. His plays are remembered for their lyric intensity, but a trenchant wit was also very much present.
DeleteLOVE the quotation by Tennessee Williams! And speaking of whom, is that photo from a production of "The Night of the Iguana" by any chance?
ReplyDeleteDing! Ding! Ding! It is indeed Iguana, Debra.
DeleteGreat quotes!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mitchell.
DeleteNot been to a show in years Kirk! Just a few music gigs :-D
ReplyDeleteMusic gigs fall under the theatrical umbrella, Ananka.
DeleteTennessee William's quote grabs me.
ReplyDeleteAndrew, here's another quote from Williams:
Delete"I don't think that anything that occurs in life should be omitted from art, though the artist should present it in a fashion that is artistic and not ugly. I set out to tell the truth. And sometimes the truth is shocking."
You have quotes from all the gianrs
ReplyDeleteRuby, I left out Shakespeare's "All the world's a stage..." figuring everybody's familiar with it by now.
DeleteI'm not fond of crowds so plays and such are not on my list of things to do.
ReplyDeleteMike, most of the plays I've seen I'm not even in the theatre but watching them on PBS.
DeleteI really like the Tennessee William quote!
ReplyDeleteOops, I meant Tennessee Williams! :)
ReplyDeleteLinda, as long as you don't call him Tennessee Ernie Ford, it's all right.
DeleteIt is truly profound how the theater can bring us together to share in the longings of the human heart through a simple prayer or a play. These quotes remind us that the stage is a unique place where we can find empathy for others and explore the deeper passions that connect us all.
ReplyDeleteMelody, what you just said I could have used as a quote!
Delete"return of art to life". Goosebumps. I love that.
