It's always interesting to watch how a show morphs and changes over time to meet the needs of culture and holding interest of the audience.
I love the blending of pop culture, humor, and whatever the shows theme is in shows today.
Great article. I just now double-checked my post to make sure I got it right the first time, and, for once, I did (though I'm sure I'll find there are 15 other things I screwed up)

Postino, I know you know a lot of comic history. It seems to me that when the Captain Marvel books were discontinued, lot of the writers migrated to DC. I don't know if any of them wrote for Batman, but the tone was similar. Bat Mite in particular seems like he'd fit right along side the tiger Tawky Tawny and the worm Master Mind. The difference is the Captain Marvel comics were like that from the very beginning, and Batman wasn't., so the change seems like a bit of a betrayal. I remember picking up a DC Captain Marvel comic about 10 years ago, and it was much less cartoony, more realistic, than the 1940s version so as to fit in the DC universe. But, knowing what Captain Marvel was originally like, THAT seemed to me like a betrayal! Also, I know DC is still looking for a way to bring back Plastic-Man, be true to Plastic-Man's classic style, and STILL have it part of the stylistically much-different DC universe. Not an easy task. I think we just have to take each superhero era on its own terms, which I've tried to do in this piece.

Very happy you enjoyed the post, Postino.

Kirkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02155991693956178030noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-635884225797829085.post-82112184991243083522014-04-28T08:05:35.508-07:002014-04-28T08:05:35.508-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Kirkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02155991693956178030noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-635884225797829085.post-56761398178704773882014-04-28T02:38:11.189-07:002014-04-28T02:38:11.189-07:00I enjoyed your article about Semple and the Bat-ph...I enjoyed your article about Semple and the Bat-phenomenon. Holy narration, Kirkman! I did not know that Semple was the voice-over intoning "Same Bat time, same bat channel!" at the end of each cliffhanger. That was a really great voice, and I wondered who it belonged to. I'm sure if it had been an actor, and had that actor any spoken lines in any show of the era I would have instantly recognized it. It has been a long time since I have seen an episode of Batman, and yet all the voices of the characters, and the announcer, are in my head as crystal clear as if the TV was on and I was watching the show right now. Such was the impression it had on me. I was 19 when it was on the air and part of that Baby Boomer crowd many advertisers and shows aimed at.

I was one who grew up with the Bat-mite, Bathound, silly science fiction stories of the comic books, and there came a time when I refused to buy them any more. But then the editor changed (to Julius Schwartz from Jack Schiff) and the artwork was different (Carmine Infantino instead of Bob Kane's ghost, Sheldon Moldoff), and I got re-interested in Batman. The TV show nearly caused the Batman comic to be cancelled, because when the novelty of the show wore off the sales of the comic dropped off a cliff.

Ah, but that is all part of the boom-bust cycle of both comics and TV shows. Batman ran out of Bat-fuel at some point. I think the humor being so deadpan worked against it. It became too predictable and a Davy Crockett-like fad with tons of merchandising that was over fast.

In those days I swear shows had shorter lifespans. About the only real long-running shows on the air were Disneyland, Gunsmoke and Bonanza. When there were only three networks they were constantly working their line-ups.

I did not remember Semple had written several movies I liked a lot, including The Parallax View or Thee Days of the Condor. It's not that I don't read credits, or that I didn't remember Semple was the creator and head writer of the Batman show, His later writing credits just didn't stay in my brain, I guess.Postinohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05853607848670921106noreply@blogger.com
