Quips and Quotations (Rainy Day Women ♯12 & 35 Edition)

One should always be drunk. That's all that matters...But with what? With wine, with poetry, or with virtue, as you chose. But get drunk.

--Charles Baudelaire

  1. And to think..... today would have been Betty Ford's birthday.

And my favorite quote to commemorate such is that of Winston Churchill. "I may be drunk, Miss, but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly."

    1. Churchill? Maddie, I imagine his philosophy was, whatever gets you through the Blitz.

As for Betty Ford, she once did a cameo on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and for that I'll always have a soft spot for her.

  2. Hi, Kirk!

When I was a boy I watched quite a few W.C. Fields movies. Like Fields, I have a problem with small, unruly children. Fields is quoted as saying:

Ah, the patter of little feet around the house. There's nothing like having a midget for a butler.

Here are some of Fields' booze quotes:

A woman drove me to drink and I didn't even have the decency to thank her.

I never worry about being driven to drink; I just worry about being driven home.

I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food.

Always carry a flagon of whiskey in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake.

Some weasel took the cork out of my lunch!

Drown in a cold vat of whiskey? Death, where is thy sting?

    I drink therefore I am.

    Thanks, good buddy Kirk!

    1. Shady, you don't see Fields on TV much anymore. True, everything fades, and we live in an era where Pulp Fiction may be considered an "old" movie, but even on TCM you don't see his films as often as those of such contemporaries as Laurel and Hardy or the Marx Brothers. I wonder if Fields is now too edgy for our seemingly anything-goes culture.

    1. Right, Adam, and whose fault was it that he no longer had an uncle? With great power comes great responsibility!

  4. Looking at Charles Baudelaire, I don't know that I'd take his advice.

    1. Mitchell, I chose the most debauched picture of him I could find.

    2. I don't know, Debra. There's two poets in this post, and one was more of a homebody than the other (though I suppose the homebody could have slipped out to the liquor store when nobody was looking.)

  7. Let's not forget Field's delivery, John. He sometimes made me laugh saying something in a certain way that wasn't inherently funny. For instance, in one film he turns to a picture of Abraham Lincoln and loudly proclaims, "Honest Abe!". It had me on the floor laughing, and for really no reason at all!
