Vital Viewing (Senior Living Edition)

Actor Burt Reynolds (seen here with a "cougar") was born on this day in 1936. Just last year he appeared in the feature film The Last Movie Star, with Chevy Chase and Kathleen Nolan (Richard Crenna's wife on The Real McCoys.) I can't tell you whether this flick was good, bad, or in-between, because I didn't know of its existence until about 15 minutes ago (if you've seen it and want to give a mini-review in the comment section, feel free to do so.) Here's a clip not of the movie itself but the movie's premier at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, featuring the aforementioned Reynolds, Chase, Noland, and festival co-founder Robert De Niro:

It may be just simple nostalgia on my part (after all, I grew up in the 1970s), but even in stoop-shouldered, cane-wielding old age, Burt Reynolds is still the coolest guy in the room.

Here's a clip to enjoy from way-back-when:

Fun and games during the Energy Crises.

  1. Burt Reynolds was so unbelievably hot. Had he not had so much "work" done over the years, I'd probably still find him hot.

  2. Before 1970, Mitchell, Reynolds looked a lot like Marlon Brando; their eyes were similar. Now Reynolds has that kind of vacant stare that usually comes with having the lids or whatever lifted. He used to also have one of the all-time great smiles. In the first clip his grin seemed kind of weak, almost forced. The result of a facelift, maybe? Of course, it could be he simply wasn't feeling all that great (it's said that doing all his own stunts has caught up with him and he's often in great pain.) At any rate, at 81, the fundamental charisma is still there. At least that's how it seems to me.

And Mitchell, you might find this interesting:

    1. Very charismatic dude, parsnip. Burt Reynolds was very different from other male movie stars of the 1970s, moody Method actors such as Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, or Robert De Niro. Reynolds was a throwback to the 1930s and '40s. Clark Gable. Errol Flynn. Cary Grant. Reynolds would have fit right in with them.

  5. I didn't know he dated a woman 20 years older than him. She did age very well, so I can't blame him really.

    1. Adam, I put a picture of Reynolds and Dinah Shore on top rather than a picture of just Reynolds because this post is about how aging has finally caught up with the once vibrant movie star. I thought it would be interesting to show him not only when he was young, but when he was something of a boy toy (though that term hadn't been coined at the time, and a cougar was either a mountain lion or a car.)

Incidentally, Dinah Shore's fame hardly rests on whom she dated. Once a household name, she's gradually slipped into obscurity, but she had a very interesting career. I might do a post on her one of these days.

  7. John, Deliverance is what made Reynold's a star, but, storywise, it's more Jon Voight's movie.
