In Memoriam: Lynn Redgrave 1943--2010

Actress. Georgy Girl.

Hey there, Georgy girl
Swingin' down the street so fancy-free
Nobody you meet could ever see the loneliness there - inside you
Hey there, Georgy girl
Why do all the boys just pass you by?
Could it be you just don't try or is it the clothes you wear?

You're always window shopping but never stopping to buy
So shed those dowdy feathers and fly - a little bit

Hey there, Georgy girl
There's another Georgy deep inside
Bring out all the love you hide and, oh, what a change there'd be
The world would see a new Georgy girl

Hey there, Georgy girl
Dreamin'; of the someone you could be
Life is a reality, you can't always run away
Don't be so scared of changing and rearranging yourself
It's time for jumping down from the shelf - a little bit

--"Georgy Girl" Performed by The Seekers. Words by Jim Dale and Music by Tom Springfield

(Like the above song? Then see the movie of the same name. Even if you don't like the above song, see the movie anyway. Lynn's just wonderful in it--KJ)

  1. I saw the headline early this morning. Remember, we were only recently speaking of Swinging London and dolly birds and you said you thought you'd heard the phrase in something like Georgy Girl. She wasn't very old either. ;~{

    I owned the Seekers record on 45 rpm.

  2. @Limes--That's right, we were talking about it over at your place.

    I never considered myself a Lynn Redgrave fan until I saw Georgy Girl for the first time about a year ago (I was familiar with the song). She should have had a much bigger career than she did. I'll never understand how show biz works.

    Do you still own that Seekers 45? Probably worth something.

  3. I don't have the vinyl any longer, Kirk. The circumstances of my leaving my marriage were such that I am missing many artifacts and photographs from my life up to age 50. ;~{

    Lynn Redgrave was also in a U.S. TV series I enjoyed and I cannot bring it to mind immediately. When I have a moment to breathe, I'll Google it. Or maybe you know it and I can keep working at my real work while being a sloth at Googling. I'm buried today.

  5. I thank you for throwing me a rope, Sir! I thought you'd know.

    WV - deactin. For Lynn Redgrave (and most of her family) deactin is what it was all about.

  7. The Seekers come from our neck of the woods. I loved them passionately as a young woman.

    It's sad about Lynn Redgrave. She was too young to die. But hopefully she had a good life, certainly she had a talented one.

  8. @standing--Vanessa was certainly edgier off-screen, what with her support of the PLO and other one-time radical causes. On-screen I guess she's most famous for Blowup and Julia, but I liked her as Guinevere in Camelot.

    @Elisabeth--The Seekers were from Australia? I didn't know that.

  9. yes, she was out there off-screen. i think on screen and stage, she had more substance to her, more breadth and depth.
